Me first!

A Thanksgiving
by bobby bryde

1971. We are at my Aunt Bernie’s, Blue Point, NY. I’m 14 - already a football junkie - and upstairs alone watching the game I’ve been waiting all week for: Nebraska/Oklahoma, both unbeaten. While 25-30 people downstairs are wondering where Bobby went, I’m on pins and needles watching what would turn out to be the second best NCAA football game I’ve ever seen (Nebraska/Miami Orange Bowl 31-30 which I was fortunate to attend and root ‘Canes to their first Title). It’s funny: if you ask me the final score I would guess 31-27, but it was the big plays by Johnny Rodgers and Greg Pruitt that stand out. And I don’t know who it was who eventually brought up my turkey dinner, but I can assure you he/she went away shaking his/her head (sort of like everyone does today!), while I couldn’t understand why everyone would choose to miss such a terrific, historic game. Since then Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday, and it wasn’t only my Mom’s cooking which brought me home on leave in November instead of December. Now, the games aren’t as much fun, and there aren’t 25-30 people running around downstairs, but it’s nice to eat, relax, and reminisce about when football was fun to watch - and not just a business.
